A Military Divorce Requires Unique Experience and Knowledge
Members and spouses of service members of the military face unique challenges that many of us will never have to deal with in our day-to-day lives. Unusual hours for training. Extended field exercises. Long-term deployments to hostile environments. When it comes to a divorce involving a member of the military, there are also unusual circumstances that must be taken into consideration regarding child custody and parenting time, division of retirement pension plans, special pay and other property settlements.
The family law team at Kerr & Hendershot understands what military life is like. We have represented many service men and women and their spouses. Our attorneys have seen first-hand what the stress of service in any branch of the U.S. military can do to a family.
"I am a former infantry officer and JAG officer. I know that every MOS offers a unique set of pressures on family life. It also means that special consideration must be taken into account when fighting to protect your rights about custody issues, parenting time and levels of support." — Managing Attorney Simon "Trey" Hendershot, III

An Example of How Our Experience Matters
Standard possession orders are well intentioned, but they don't always make sense for service members and their families. We remove obstacles to being a good non-custodial parent. Military service often requires a non-custodial parent to lose parenting opportunities because of field training exercises or special deployments. We often help non-custodial parents make up lost parenting time through special agreements, such as the modified possession order, the right to exchange or "make-up" visitation periods during the other parent's custodial time or to spend time with the child under other special circumstances.
