A recent Radford University study examined divorced people by occupation and found that some jobs are associated with higher divorce rates. You can't generalize a couple's relationship based on how they earn their money but the study did produce some interesting results.
Study Results
Dancers and choreographers topped the charts with a 43.05 percent divorce rate. The study also listed the following occupations and associated divorce rates:
- Bartenders: 38.43 percent
- Massage therapists: 38.22 percent
- Gaming cage worker: 34.66 percent
- Extruding machine operator: 32.74 percent
- Gaming service workers: 31.35 percent
- Food and tobacco factory workers: 29.78 percent
- Telephone operators: 29.30 percent
- Nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides: 28.95 percent
- Entertainers and performers, sports and related workers: 28.49 percent
- Baggage porters and concierges: 28.49 percent
- Telemarketers: 28.10 percent
- Waiters and waitresses: 27.12 percent
- Roofers: 26.86 percent
- Maids and housekeepers: 26.38 percent
The study indicates rates of correlation only. That is, many dancers and bartenders may enjoy fulfilling and enduring marriages. A person's occupation is not necessarily predictive of divorce. No two couples are alike and couples experiencing marital problems cannot be generically categorized based on occupation.
Just as there are complex emotional aspects associated with any breakdown in a marriage, there are significant legal considerations as well. Those contemplating divorce should schedule a confidential consultation with a Texas family law lawyer to discuss the divorce process, asset protection, and custody and child support concerns in order to decide what course of action is right for their specific situation.
